About Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the area of dentistry concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion (improper bites). These improper bites are the result of tooth irregularity and problems with how the upper and lower jaws relate to each other.

Children

Ideally we would like to see children at the age of 9 or 10 for assessment just before the last baby teeth are lost. This is before the pubertal growth spurt when, if necessary, certain appliances can be fitted to help influence jaw growth and tooth movement in patients with prominent upper or lower front teeth. Sometimes an earlier referral will be sought by your general dentist who has picked up on a problem that may warrant early treatment.

Adults

One third of all Dr Sheils cases are adults. It is never too late to have orthodontic treatment. Once teeth and gums are healthy you can still attain that smile you always longed for. If you are an adult and are thinking of an orthodontic assessment then a trip to your general dentist first would be a good idea so as he/she can give you a clean bill of dental health.
